The API offers various protocols (ISO9141, CAN, ISO 15765, J1850 and so on) and thus lets third party applications to send and receive messages without having to know anything about what happens between the API and the communication stack of ECU - it's all transparent. Buy any (expensive) J2534 flash/diagnostic tools and what you get is their proprietary software for diagnostics, supplemented with aВ standard J2534 API (Win32 DLL) that uses the hardware supplied to communicate with the car via its OBD port. This adapter is a Volvo special tool with number 9513062. The Ethernet cable is connected from the VIDA workstation's Ethernet network input into the vehicle's OBD-connector via a VOE ( Volvo OBD to Ethernet) adapter. There is still support for DiCE and J2534 devices but the communication may be very slow using these devices. No vehicle communication tool such as DiCEВ is needed.
